ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN LOGISTICS SERVICES

The logistics process begins with a demand, followed by ordering of goods, collecting them from the customer, supplying for production, internal movements, collecting finished goods from the warehouse, and finally shipping to the customer. The entire process is efficient, with minimal movements, complete transparency and guaranteed traceability.

Where can a third-party logistics provider be utilized? How can outsourcing logistics reduce overall logistics costs? What does a complete logistics service include?

Doubling the Efficiency of the Fulfillment Center with a Real-time Routing Using AI

At Gousto, when the distribution center was launched, they had a lot of efficiency challenges, as many processes were adapted for “standard” distribution centers, which are basically a little easier to manage. By using several artificial intelligence algorithms, we managed to double the efficiency of the distribution center, which effectively increased the net operating margin and at the same time enabled the rapid growth of the company. At the lecture, we will look at what challenges we encountered and how we solved them using artificial intelligence, from inventory optimization to real-time routing and managing and coordinating several centers at the same time.

Use of Artificial Intelligence in Container Scheduling to Increase Productivity (Best Practice Case)

We will describe how we used artificial intelligence to improve the process of disposing of containers from the Port of Koper. With Artificial Intelligence, we solve the problem of lack of data at the time of the ship’s arrival, about the transport of the container from Port of Koper to the final destination.
The introduced system will enable more optimal placement of containers inside the Port and thereby reduce the amount of unproductive movements, which lowers costs and increases the flow of cargo in the Port.

THE INTRODUCTION OF MES SYSTEMS IN MANUFACTURING COMPANIES ALSO IMPACTS THE REDUCTION OF LOGISTICS COSTS

Digitalization has become an essential aspect of modern manufacturing. Effective production monitoring provides us with visibility into the production process and additional information on where the product is currently placed in the production process. This information is crucial as it enables us to identify bottlenecks and areas that need improvement in the production process where we might be losing valuable time and money. Also in logistics. A well-implemented MES system can boost production efficiency and optimize internal logistics. The integration of artificial intelligence plays an integral role in achieving these goals.

What is the experience of implementation by the players in the sector? Where is the link between MES systems and logistics? How can effective implementation of MES systems impact logistics and lower OWH costs? What is the role of artificial intelligence? How to find the right solution?

Effective Production Monitoring as a Prerequisite for Greater Efficiency in Production and Logistics (Best Practice Case)

Hidria has recently inaugurated a new logistics centre dedicated to its fan production programme in Spodnja Idrija. The project’s primary objective is to enhance logistics and production efficiency through the modernization of the existing MES system.

In the new logistics centre, the visualisation of warehouse processes has resulted in increased efficiency in both the warehouse and internal logistics, accompanied by improved data transparency and quality. Standardizing warehouse and logistics processes has facilitated the automation and visualization of tasks performed by warehouse and internal logistics staff.

Within fan production, a traceability system has been implemented, enabling the tracking of screwdriving parameters, actual screwdriving values, and visualizing screwdriving instructions via the MES system. This integration has notably elevated the quality standards and overall efficiency of the production process. These innovative solutions were developed in collaboration with our external partner, Omikron d.o.o.

Prerequisites for the Introduction of MES System (Best Practice Case)

The lecture will cover the implementation process and the challenges faced when introducing the MES system in a company specialising in the production of unique stonework products with high added value. We will focus on the key strategies, techniques and solutions that enabled a successful integration into our specific production process.

Key Challenges and Opportunities of Horizontal Logistics Collaboration: Slovenian Companies Point of View

Horizontal collaboration among logistics companies offers opportunities for increased efficiency and competitiveness, yet companies face various challenges. This presentation, based on survey data from Slovenian companies, analyzes key factors influencing collaboration, benefits, obstacles, and opportunities for successful collaboration.

Challenges for Education or Challenges for the Economy – The Boiled Frog Effect

Are both schools and employers prepared to meet the challenges posed by young people? Are we able to adapt quickly enough to their needs? Is the education system open enough to change, allowing us to adjust the learning environment and, in turn, ensure a highly skilled workforce for the economy? Or are we all experiencing the boiling frog effect, where gradual changes are insufficient to meet the immediate needs of the labor market and young people?

In this article, we will present the projects of the Higher Vocational College L.I.V.E., in collaboration with the industry, through which we are transforming the learning environment, transferring best practices into the school system and back into real-world applications, increasing students’ practical training hours in companies, and introducing short (specialized) educational programs.

Optimizing Production Systems through integration of Simulation and MES: A Step Towards a Digital Twin

Compared to the large enterprises, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) contribute more than 55% of GDP in the World economies, producing greater variety, lower volume and satisfying greater personalized demand than large enterprises. Therefore, the production systems of the SMEs require advanced IT support in order to be efficiently organized and managed.

In order for simulation to enable real time operational management of a production system, based on proactive and predictive decision making, a simulation model has to be upgraded to a Digital Twin (DT). Upgrading a simulation model toward a DT requires support of an advanced IT system that would enable the real time data feeding of the simulation model in order to replicate functioning of the real system in the real time, such as the Manufacturing Execution System (MES). This approach has been applied in a company that produces pharmaceutical packaging by injection and blow molding. In order to optimize their production system, a simulation model in the software Tecnomatix Plant Simulation was developed and integrated with the DigiPro MES system.

Do We Know the Real Picture? Comparing Actual Emissions with Global Logistics Emission Council (GLEC) Default Values

New worldwide requirements for reporting cargo emissions are being introduced under the Corporate Reporting Sustainability Directive (CRSD). This paper explores approaches for estimating freight transport emissions, considering both vehicle emissions and the allocation of emissions to individual consignees based on cargo characteristics and route attributes. A key aspect of freight emissions is ensuring a transparent and equitable distribution among clients after measuring vehicle emissions. The methodology must be robust and functional even when input data is imperfect. The state-of-the-art approach currently follows the ISO 14083 standard and to use approach specified by the Global Logistics Emission Council (GLEC) framework. However, methods are sensitive to input data about every transport chain element in the process. To address this limitation, we present approaches for estimating emissions using measured vehicle data and evaluate alternative methods by integrating routing tools and traffic sensor data. This allows for the estimation of emissions from internal combustion engine and electric vehicles using the vehicle-specific power model. Additionally, we conduct a sensitivity analysis to estimate an impact of degraded quality of input data such as vehicle trajectories with positioning errors on final results to assess the impact of unreliable trip data on individual packages. The findings can help organizations enhance data quality, improve emissions reporting, and optimize operations to reduce carbon emissions.
